{Seattle Documentary Family Photographer} 365: Ready, Set, Go!!!

December 30, 2015

365blogHey, photog friends who have considered but never attempted a 365 Project! Hey, friends who wouldn’t really call themselves a photographer, but are intrigued by the idea of taking a photo every single day for an entire year. It’s your lucky day because I wrote this blog post especially for you.

1. Just show up.

All you need to do is take one picture every day. Just show up. It doesn’t matter what it is or whether it’s even good; just show up and take a picture. I hear my friend Kate’s voice in my head all the time: “Do the work.” Anyone who’s completed a 365 will tell you it’s a HUGE commitment, but the benefits that you will reap are so very worth it. And wouldn’t it be awesome to surprise yourself by doing something you didn’t think you could do? Trust me. It’s awesome.

2. Reframe your definition of success.

I blogged about this in January. It took me being able to look at success & failure differently in order to have the guts to embark on this project. “Success” no longer meant finishing all 365 days. I’m so happy to be on the verge of completing it, and feel successful in so many other ways. Yes, I shot for every single day this year (with the exception of a few days, probably 5ish but definitely less than 10) where I totally spaced (rare once you’re in a groove) or got my shot in past midnight. More on missing days below. I captured moments in the life of my family that are so mundane and ordinary but that otherwise would never have been documented had it not have been for this personal project. I already know that many of these images from this year will be counted among my most treasured family photos. What a priceless collection.

Seattle documentary photographer 365 project

I’ve found my style (it was in me all along!), honed my technical and artistic skills all year, and explored some genres that are outside of my usual subject of choice (tiny humans) like macro and landscape photography.Yi Li Photography, Carrie Yuan

3. You make the rules.

It’s your personal project and you’re an adult, so you get to make your own rules! Some people choose to only shoot one type of subject, some use only one lens, some only use their mobile phone. For me, I didn’t want to impose a lot of restrictions on myself because I was trying to make it as easy as possible. Come on, it’s hard enough to take a photo every single day for a year anyway!!! My (loose) rules were that I would show up every day, mostly document my family OR something interesting to me (client work crept in for a tiny handful of days when I just couldn’t bring myself to turn the camera on my family after a long client session), my 365 would be shot on my dSLR (except for one iPhone photo that snuck in from one day when I was out very late at a coworker’s farewell party at another coworker’s houseboat on Lake Union [good excuse, right?]), I wouldn’t sweat it or beat myself up if I missed a day here or there (I’d shoot two the next day), I’d share a photo on Facebook or my blog whenever I felt moved to share, but I would not obligate myself to post every single photo everywhere. Which brings me to my next point.

4. Grace upon grace upon grace upon grace.

Part 1 is showing up. Part 2 is giving yourself grace (upon grace upon grace) and learning to forgive yourself for shooting crap today, so that you can show up again tomorrow and try again. Let’s face it. The reality is photographers don’t make magic every.single.day. No one does. It’s just not possible. You’ll only find the magic if you accept the mess (and crappy photos) that comes with it. It’s a package deal. You know that quote about only being able to see the light because there’s darkness? This is the same thing. You’ll find and make magic. But there will be some days like this. Pretty bad, right?

DSC_7701But there will also be (many) days like this!!!!

5. If not now, when?

I hope I’ve inspired you to jump in with two feet! I’ve purposely waited to post this two days before the New Year, so that you will read it then impulsively decide to start on January 1st, but honestly there is nothing magical about starting on that day. Any day of the year is a great day to start! This has been by far my most challenging, rewarding, and stretching personal project that I’ve embarked on, and I know it can be the same for you. I’m going to come back and add another post with my favorite tips & tricks for rocking a 365 in a few days, but one of the most helpful things for me was having company along the journey. I’m so grateful to my friend Kellie B. who added me to her group of friends who were also doing a 365! I have a handful of friends who are starting 365 projects in 2016, so if you’re looking to join a group, leave a comment below and I’ll be happy to connect you! So….what are you waiting for?!

Carrie Yuan is a documentary family photographer in Seattle, Washington, who will complete her very first 365 project on December 31, 2015, specializing in documentary family photography sessions that honestly tell the story of your family’s here and now. Carrie’s passion is to document the full-of-love journey that is parenthood and childhood (with a sprinkling of humor), in all its chaos & beauty. Carrie lives in Seattle with her family: a husband who was super thrilled to receive beef jerky as a Christmas present from Carrie, a six year old who is thoroughly enjoying her very first school winter break but kinda bummed we didn’t have a White Christmas, three year old boy/girl twins who have turned into fantastic playmates for each other, and a lab-ridgeback canine who (accidentally) ate way too much chocolate this holiday season.

Carrie is currently booking family documentary photo sessions (that do NOT require the purchase of new outfits, or cleaning your house) for February 2016 and beyond, in-home documentary newborn sessions in the Greater Seattle area, and hospital newborn sessions in Seattle hospitals.

{Seattle documentary family photographer} Markles at home

December 11, 2015

I had the pleasure of spending a beautiful Sunday morning with the Markle family in their home earlier in the Fall. I arrived when the kids were still in their pajamas, and mom was busy making a delicious breakfast of cinnamon french toast, bacon, eggs, and don’t forget the coffee!

I really love how these sessions capture the beauty — the pudgy baby arms, the snuggly toes, and the cuddly hugs — in your everyday life, and also capture those wonderful details of childhood that are going to be gone as they’re replaced by new things in just a few short months or years. Parenthood can feel like such a whirlwind when you’re in the middle of it, and it’s wonderful to have a visual record of what this time and place really felt like.

This Sunday morning was filled with laughter, some tears, lots of snuggles, playtime, silliness, some of the usual childhood drama, but most of all LOVE. Thanks, guys, for the honor of documenting one of your beautiful, ordinary Sunday mornings. My hope is that these photos will grow more special and valuable to you and your kids as time passes, and take you back to this wonder-filled time in the life of your family!

{Seattle/Bellevue family documentary photographer} Becoming Elsa and Anna, and a home birthday cake smash

November 18, 2015

This family holds a special place in my heart, because I’ve been photographing their little boy Weston since the day he was born, and all throughout his entire first year of life. We culminated that year by having a birthday cake smash session at home, and also documented his big sisters playing dress up in these AMAZING Frozen-themed Elsa and Anna dresses that were made by a special aunt. Aren’t they the best?! You could just see the girls’ faces light up as they donned these magical dresses. Oh, the joys of being a little kid!

Around Weston’s 1st birthday, he was getting the hang of walking, and loved practicing back and forth between mom and dad.

This was actually Weston’s second time having cake, as he had his birthday party the weekend before. So when he saw the little cake come out, he totally knew what it was all about!!! He dove right in and I think it’s fair to say this guy loves chocolate.

After he was covered in greasy buttercream frosting, a bath in the kitchen sink was the perfect way to clean him off.

I love that we captured these photos in their first family home, because as we had the session, the house was on the market to be sold. This lovely family has since moved in to a new home in a new neighborhood, and if you know anything about the current housing market in Seattle, that is something huge to celebrate! I was happy to hear that one of the photos from our session helped them in their “winning” bid for their new home. Yay!

My heart is full. I’m exceedingly grateful for clients who have trusted me to document their lives. I’m so thrilled to finish out 2015 with a full calendar. I’ve just closed my books for the rest of the year, and will now begin accepting bookings for 2016! The beauty of documentary family photography sessions is there is no “season” for them. Your beautiful everyday is happening in your home 365 days a year (366 in 2016!), so I’d love the chance to photograph a perfect day for you and your people in 2016!

{Seattle documentary family photographer} Evening with the Hampton family

October 2, 2015

You may have noticed a few changes to my business over the past year or so. I’ve slowly moved from photographing what I thought was “expected” of me as a photographer or “desired” by clients (planned sessions at parks, etc, in coordinated outfits) and have moved in a direction that honors my gifts as an artist and storyteller, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the change (or rather, refinement) in focus. You see, I am also on a journey of embracing authenticity and whole-heartedness, channeling my inner Brené Brown, and so making the kind of photographs that really make my heart sing is all a part of that. I truly believe that by using these specific gifts I have been given and making the kind of art that is “me”, the people who want this for their own family will find me in time.

These photos fill me up with so much love. –Rob

I loved the afternoon & evening I spent with the Hampton family. Meghan and Rob have just achieved a totally major accomplishment – they survived the first year of life with twin boys…..AND an older brother! Hehe, sound familiar (okay, not the all-boy part, for which they deserve extra kudos)? I could so see myself in their shoes only 2 short years ago when my own twins turned one. There’s chaos, drool marks, toys and laundry piles, exhaustion, (a few) tears, all knit together with laughter and love. There’s the feeling that this-is-so-amazing-we-are-so-very-lucky right alongside the this-is-sometimes-really-hard and i-am-really-really-tired and pass-me-another-gin-and-tonic.

These guys are currently busting out of their 2-bedroom, 1-bath home, so it was extra special to be able to document them together in this place where they became a family…..before they move on to a larger place with more than 1 bathroom!

Yes, mom can play the guitar too! And she has a voice like an angel. The music that filled their home was some of the most special and spirited I’ve heard in a long time. I’ll be carrying it with me in my heart for a while to come.

I asked Meghan what the story was behind this sweet post-it note I noticed on one of their kitchen cabinets. She couldn’t remember exactly, but said she probably wrote it during a moment of exhaustion during the last year. I can totally relate, and I think it sums up their family just perfectly.

{Seattle family documentary photographer} Six month in-home baby session

September 25, 2015

Since I’m getting ready to shoot this guy’s one year session very soon, I figured it was about time I share my favorites from his six month session. We met at the Markle’s cute home and spent some time shooting in and around their home, then went for a neighborhood walk to enjoy the flowering trees, before it was the little guy’s nap time. Really, my definition of a perfect morning, if you ask me.

I really love the pace of documentary family sessions. Because I’m with you for longer than an hour, there’s time to just relax and be yourselves. Tons of time for cuddles, drinking your coffee, nursing, jumping on the bed, coloring, diaper changes, perhaps a meltdown, flying down the sidewalk, twirling, and whatever else usually fills your day.

Here are a handful of my favorites documenting this super adorable chunk of a baby boy. He certainly is loved by his mom & dad and two big sisters! Hey Dax, I can’t wait to hang out again and see how you’ve changed now that you’re ONE!

{Seattle documentary family photographer} Kindergarten eve

September 16, 2015

seattle documentary photographerDear Avery,

Tomorrow is your first day of kindergarten. Where, oh where, did the time go? While these photos from your birth day don’t seem like they happened yesterday, they also don’t seem like they happened almost six years ago. I barely recognize those two adults in those pictures. We had no idea what an amazing journey we were beginning. Your dad and I joke that we can barely remember what our life was like before you arrived, and it’s true. I think we used to go to work, come home, make dinner, and then watch TV until it was time to go to bed. We have little recollection of it, except that it was easy and pretty fun. Life is less easy now but definitely more fun, and filled with a type of joy and love that we did not know was possible until you arrived.

In the last 5 years I’ve learned a bit about what it means to be a mother. I am still learning, but you have been exceedingly patient with me, and I love you so much for that. The beginning was filled with a lot of anxiety and doubt, but these days I feel more “myself” than I ever have in my life, and you helped me find that.

2015-09-16_0002

Tonight I have so many thoughts swimming around in my head. It feels like an ending, though I know it’s going to be a wonderful beginning for you as you start your school years. I am excited, worried, proud, scared, anxious, happy, giddy all rolled up together. I know you are ready for school, and that you’re mostly going to rock it! When things are tough or you are scared or hurt, I’ll be here to help you find your way and support you as you figure things out.

seattle hospital newborn sibling photos

I still remember the exact words I said to Baba when Dr. Lin told us that I was pregnant with twins. “Avery’s gonna be PISSED.” (Avery, that’s another word that you must be >18 years old to use) But you know what? You completely surprised me and exceeded any expectations of what it would be like for you to have two babies join our family. You are such an amazing big sister to Morgs and Benny, and they already miss you so much now that you’re not at the same school as them. I hope you will always look out for them, play with them, and have a strong sibling bond with the two of them. They really adore you and look up to you.

2015-09-16_0004

Your backpack is packed, and your lunch is ready. Sleep tight, my pumpkin. Tomorrow is a big day. I love you so very much.

Love,

Mama

{Seattle documentary photographer} VOICE 2015 finalist

September 4, 2015
seattle documentary baby photographer

Last month I was so thrilled and humbled to learn that two of my images were selected for inclusion in the 2015 VOICE Image Collection. This year has been such a sweet time of growth and settling into who I am as an artist and photographer (which I plan to blog about very soon…), and there is something really vulnerable about putting your art out there that is YOU, and then letting go of what comes next or whether people love it or hate it. I’m so very grateful for this season of personal reflecseattle documentary family photographertion and growth, and then to have my work recognized is just a delightful icing on the cake.

Today I’m sharing the two images that were included in the 220 image collection. This first image is in the “Newness” category, and is my little nephew Chase at 2 weeks old. After I took this image, I immediately referred to it as “Chicken Legs” because it captures his tiny baby legs with all the loose skin and too-big onesie. Those skinny baby legs are so fleeting and easy to forget, so I love to document this distinctly newborn characteristic. When I submitted the image and needed a title, I chose “First stretch”, but at the end of the day, this will always be “Chicken Legs” to me.

seattle documentary baby photographer

The second image featured in the collection is in the “Self Portrait” category. I took this photo of myself with my 11 week old twins in 2013, really just to document the changes that my body went through gestating 10+ combined pounds of baby plus an undisclosed amount of non-baby weight to carry these babies to 36 weeks.

This twin pregnancy was really stressful for me, so much so that I haven’t ever written about it until now. Anyone who has experienced near loss of a pregnancy knows how scary and out-of-control you feel with the uncertainty. Couple that with infertility, and you have the perfect storm for insanity. I started bleeding at 6ish weeks. We weren’t sure if the babies were going to stay or go, was how I put it. The scariest bleed happened at 13 weeks, when I felt a giant gush of fluid, then went to the bathroom, sat on the toilet, and watched blood pour out of me. I put on a pad, drove the 10 minutes from work to Urgent Care, and in that time soaked through the pad, through my pants, and onto my car seat. I wrapped my jacket around my waist and went it. The babies weren’t going to stay.

But you know what? By the grace of God, they did. In hindsight now, I see that I squandered a lot of joy during that pregnancy. I missed ordinary moments of magic with my 3 year old, because I was so preoccupied with worrying about the pregnancy and preparing myself for the worse.

I was hospitalized at 32 weeks with pre-term contractions. The doctors prepared us to deliver the babies prematurely. I got 2 steroid doses to mature their lungs. But then the contractions stopped.

At 34 weeks, I developed stretch marks. A lot of them. And I was really happy about it! Because that meant the babies were growing bigger and still cooking. I started to let joy creep in. As I’m typing this I still get all teary-eyed and have this emotional knot in my throat taking myself back there. If I’m completely honest with myself, it was such a vulnerable time in my life, facing the reality of every day not knowing whether your babies are going to “stay or go”. And now that they’re here, the kind of bad news is that this vulnerability never really goes away. In fact, it’s really much worse now that I know these wonderful little people. This stuff can be so heavy and stifling and make life really scary. Really, the only way to get through it is to be so very grateful for the stretch marks on my belly and the moments I have with these little people who call me mom.

seattle documentary twins photographer

A funny side note about this photo is that it totally captures my twins’ different personalities. Morgan, on the left, is having a characteristic meltdown, while Bennett, on the right, is like, “Dude. Chill.” hahahaha.

Please check out all of the other very inspiring work of my fellow artists by clicking on the VOICE icon at the very top which will take you to the collection.

{Seattle / Everett hospital newborn photographer} Welcome, Atticus!

July 25, 2015

Most photographers agree: it’s nerve-wracking to photograph another photographer! So I had a mix of excitement and nervousness when Shauna hired me for a hospital newborn session for her 2nd baby. She expressed that she wanted to capture the relationship between big brother and little brother. A hospital session with older siblings is so different than when it’s a couple’s first baby. There’s such a range of emotions, from the exhaustion from the final days of pregnancy, trying to recover from delivery, the start of very interrupted sleep, the absolute sweetness of a new baby, plus the chaos of adding the baby to the mix, and how the older child will react to this huge change. I can so relate, as I’ve totally been there myself.

When I arrived, big brother was being a little shy and really, just a typical 4 year old. Shauna, being the real pro she is, used some reverse psychology on him that worked magic. I think we captured some really sweet, authentic moments between big brother and baby brother, and also mom and her first baby! Though I have to mention, that my favorite image that was almost an outtake is the first image featuring mom and dad looking so serenely at their new baby, and then there’s big brother using a hospital curtain in a game tug-of-war with grandma in the background! Such a photo capturing this family’s new reality!

{Seattle hospital newborn photographer} Welcome, Dap!

July 13, 2015

I had the pleasure of meeting and photographing this not-so-little newborn baby boy yesterday morning, at just 14 hours old. Boy, he sure did test his mom and dad’s patience, arriving nearly 2 weeks past his due date. He was born on Saturday evening, after an induction that started on Wednesday evening!!! I’m so happy that they were able to have a smooth birth, even though it took a few days to get active labor started.

Katie & Dan will call this little guy Dap, which are his initials for family names. I love how he’s got a traditional name but then the initials form a new, modern name of his very own. Very cool.

It’s so magical to be able to document the formation of a new family at such a momentous time. It’s like welcoming them into this new world of parenthood, as they just promoted into the most important, rewarding, hard, exhausting, and most JOYFUL job they’ll ever work in their entire lives. Katie & Dan look like naturals, and I can already tell that they adore him. Thank you so much for choosing me to document such a special time. I wish for you joy and love on the journey ahead. But for now, just a little bit of sleep.

{Seattle documentary baby photographer} Baby Jude + company

July 7, 2015

It’s such a joy and pleasure for me to spend a morning with a new family, photographing them in their home as they play and do life together. I love watching couples become parents and create a space in their hearts and lives for a new little person. Jude was 3 months old when I photographed him with his oh-so-cool, calm, and collected parents. One of the awesome benefits of an “older” baby session is that the newborn fogginess has lifted! You’d NEVER guess that these were first time parents. I’m telling you, they had not one shred of visible anxiety or sleep-deprivation, and you know what? They looked like they were actually having FUN and enjoying this parenting gig! It was completely refreshing to see how naturally and easily both mom and dad had settled in to being parents. But after spending the morning with little Jude, I can totally see why they are so in love with this little guy. He is the sweetest!

Mom told me recently that they’ve purchased their first home together, so they’ll soon be moving out of this rental home and into a home they can call their own in a different neighborhood of Seattle. This is the great thing about doing a documentary session at home. Jude won’t have his own memories of this home, but now they have photographs of the place they called home for the first year of his life and where they became a family.

{Seattle family documentary photographer} Chatbooks: Things we love

June 18, 2015

seattle documentary family photographer giveaway

Let’s talk for a second about documenting your family’s memories through photographs. Sure, it’s a great idea to hire me once a year to document the beautiful, amazing everyday that is your family’s life, but what about the other 364 days? If you’re like me, and I bet you are, chances are a lot of those 364 days get documented with your smartphone. But after a quick share on Facebook, how do you save those photos and memories so that you can live with them? How do you make your smartphone photos tangible?

Enter Chatbooks. Yes, there are plenty of companies out there that you can use to make photo books from your phone photos. I’ve probably tried most of them. What makes Chatbooks different, and in my opinion so completely awesome, is the fact that they are automatic photo books. Yup. I said automatic. And seriously, who doesn’t need more things automated in their life?! What this means is that every time my Instagram feed reaches 60 new photos, Chatbooks will make and mail me a new 6×6″ softcover book with 60 photos in it. The cost? Just $6 + free shipping. What?!?! Yes, you read that correctly.

How it works:

You’ll need a free Instagram account. If you already have one, you’re good to go. Download the Chatbooks app to your smartphone, and set up an account that will link to your IG account. If you already have an Instagram feed, when you subscribe to the Chatbooks Instagram series, all of your photos will be chronologically placed into volumes of 60 photos each. If this creates a massive number of volumes, you can choose how many and how frequently you’d like to receive them until you’re caught up. Once you’re caught up, you get a new volume shipped each time your feed reaches 60 new photos.

What if I don’t want some photos in my book?

You’ll get an email 3 days before the book is made, informing you that now is the time to exclude any photos if you want. Simply open the app on your phone and make any changes, including selecting the cover photo (default is the first photo of the 60).

I know. You’re wondering about the quality.

Because $6 is just too good to be true. I wondered this too. The covers are 100# matte paper and the pages are 100# satin coated paper. Compared to other companies whose products are 4x the cost, the difference is negligible. Again, what really tips the scales for me is the fact that Chatbooks are automatic. Making books with the other companies and other apps just took so darn long to choose photos & layouts, I just know I wouldn’t make the time to do it with any regularity. So eliminating all of that hassle really is where I think Chatbooks are just magical.

Chatbooks Instagram series

Receiving a little envelope with a new Chatbook just makes my day! And my kids just love thumbing through them. I am a huge proponent of getting your memories out of digital format and into something tangible for you to live with. In this digital era, we often underestimate the power of printed photographs to improve our mood, uplift us, and inspire.

Chatbooks have changed the way I use my phone to capture everyday memories. I rarely share iPhone photos on Facebook anymore. I’m uploading to Instagram instead (pssst…are you following me? I’m @yiliphoto), since I know those photos will end up printed in a Chatbook. My 10th volume is printing as we speak, and I can’t wait to get it. I’m hooked!

Now is the time to get on this!

I almost forgot what prompted me to finally write this blog post. I got an email from Chatbooks the other day announcing that they will soon be releasing Chatbooks 2.0, and they’re raising the prices of books by $2. BUT, for existing subscribers, they’ll grandfather in the current pricing of $6 for an additional 2 years! The new app will be released in late July/early August, so it’s obviously a great time to become a subscriber at current pricing!

Your first book is free!

This post & giveaway is not sponsored by Chatbooks. We just really love their stuff! And I know I really appreciate it when someone takes the time to provide an unsponsored product review. A few months ago I had an issue with one of my books, where some photos I excluded got printed in the book. I contacted them, and was so impressed with their customer service. Very responsive and totally made things right (even though it was my fault for not having the latest version of the app on my phone!) In the spirit of full disclosure, if you use the promo code above to get your first book free, I get a buck towards my future Chatbooks. Yay!

Ethan, Class of 2015

June 5, 2015

Tonight is this dude’s high school graduation. As a photographer, I’m thrilled with how his set turned out. As a mom, I need to take a second to let that sink in. I can only imagine the emotions that Ethan’s mom Cyndy is experiencing, seeing her youngest child cross this major milestone. In working with Cyndy and Ethan, I’ve had a tiny glimpse into what it will be like to watch the kids grow up, become teenagers, and then prepare to fly from the nest. It’s thrilling and awe-inspiring, and fear-inducing, all at the same time. She’ll say, “It seems like it was just yesterday that he was starting kindergarten,” as I proceed to bawl my mama eyes out, knowing that my oldest is getting ready to START kindergarten in the fall. I can barely imagine what it’s like to be at the other end: high school graduation time. I imagine that parents are filled with pride, joy, excitement, anxiety, and a little bit of fear of the unknown. But probably mostly pride and happiness and excitement.

High school senior photography is not my usual genre, let alone senior GUYS! So you can imagine I was feeling a bit out of my element when Cyndy hired me to take her youngest son Ethan’s senior photos. I had visions of stiff teenage guy coupled with awkward photographer skilled at the baby and toddler set, but clueless when it comes to teenagers, staring blankly at each other for painfully long intervals. What do they talk about? What do they wear? What do they find interesting or funny? How do you make them laugh??! Well, my anxieties were completely unfounded. Our session around the high school campus and later around the waterfront and lighthouse area turned out to be spontaneous, fun, and dare I say eeeeeasy! Plus, it’s an added bonus when mom is completely hilarious, easy going, and knows how to laugh and make everyone else laugh.

Here are a few of my favorites from our session:

2015-06-05_00012015-06-05_00022015-06-05_0003

Back in January I was invited to attend Ethan’s Eagle Scout Court of Honor, and was honored to take some photographs at that event. What a special night it was to honor all of the hard work that Ethan put into accomplishing the goal of making Eagle Scout. It was really neat to see how proud his parents are of him.

Congratulations, Ethan! I feel like I am sharing a small part in the pride and excitement that I know your mom is feeling for you today. Go out there and make this wonderful life your own! You have many people cheering you on.

{Seattle documentary family photographer} Washington Park Arboretum & Home session

June 4, 2015
seattle documentary family photo

I’m finally getting around to blogging this sweet family’s session. We actually started at the Arboretum and ended at their home, but I’m showing you the stuff at home first, since I really love being able to capture a family in their home environment doing the things they love with the people they love. Even the most mundane, everyday things that we do with our kids a million times, like reading books, will take on special meaning years down the road when the books change and they’re reading to themselves.

This family lives in THE coolest urban condo that’s been completely remodeled, and their little girl has a bedroom made of dreams. The windows are these really cool, ornate shapes with antique stained glass. It felt like being inside of a castle. And then there’s Gus, their super mellow doggie, who didn’t even flinch when baby girl took a tumble right over his back! I felt so privileged that they let me in to capture a bit of their everyday together.

And yes, tears are part of the everyday! I believe that capturing a bit of this reality is an important part in documenting childhood and the parenting experience. And we can all relate! Mom has a great sense of humor and handles parenting with such grace that I am in awe!

But seriously, baby girl was so joyful for 99% of our time together. She was seriously on the go, as most toddlers her age are. We had fun checking out different parts of the Arboretum, feeding the ducks, and just being silly! It’s really neat to watch the joy on baby girl’s face as she experiences new things, and then see how her parents light up watching her smile. So very sweet.

{Seattle documentary family photographer} Bainbridge Island family day trip

May 25, 2015
seattle documentary family photo session

We’re in town for the long weekend, so we decided to hang out with my sister and her family and take a day trip to Bainbridge Island. Documenting these little trips is totally my jam, so I was happy for the opportunity to do some photographic storytelling. The kids absolutely love riding the ferry, and there are plenty of fun things to do just a stone’s throw from the ferry terminal. Our original plan to walk-on to the ferry and leave our car parked in downtown Seattle was foiled by all of the waterfront construction and revisions to parking since our last trip to Bainbridge. There used to be a ton of public parking under the viaduct that was free on Sundays, so you could easily park then walk-on to the ferry. The last time we did this in August, we took our red wagon to haul the twins. Well today we were surprised to find out that while all of the street parking is still free on Sundays, it’s now limited to 2 hours on Sundays. Boo. So alas, we ended up driving on.

It was just about lunch time when we got there, so we grabbed some crepes, which ended up being pretty kid-friendly. We had all kinds of varieties – ham & cheese, veggie, salmon, Canadian bacon & egg. Yummy! Next the kids headed to the fun little playground to get out all of their energy. After a good long play session, one of our kids heard another father mention ice cream, so alas, it was time for us to head back up the street for the highlight of the day: ice cream! Mora Iced Creamery has an overwhelming selection of flavors, so I stuck with my old favorite of banana, while Eric savored his favorite of white chocolate (eeeew!!!). For the twins, they requested chocolate, and big sis enjoyed mint with shaved chocolate.

Thanks to Eric for snapping a few photos on my camera while I enjoyed my ice cream. See if you can spot me in the slideshow! My favorite memory of the day was on the return ferry ride back to Seattle. Morgs kept saying she wanted to go outside, so we ended up at the very front of the boat on the outside deck. I sat down and she plopped down on my lap, with the wind in our hair, and Bennett jumping around like a crazy boy in front of us. I stretched out my legs, and she stretched hers out and crossed them on top of mine. I snapped to photo to remember those few blissful moments of contentment.

{Seattle documentary family photographer’s} 2015 Mother’s Day gift guide, procrastinators edition

May 6, 2015

seattle mothers day gift guide

We know all mom wants is to have some relaxing, kid-free time to reflect on how amazingly blessed she is to be a mother. But a sweet gift never hurt anyone either. So this year I’m once again sharing my favorite ideas for Mother’s Day gifts. I can pretty much guarantee that she will be completely overjoyed to receive any one of these from her partner and/or kids.

seattle mothers day gifts1. ONA leather Capri Camera tote bag. This won’t arrive in time for Mother’s Day, but I guarantee, she’ll forgive you.

2. Rose gold ellipsoid pendant necklace from Anthropologie. Mom may have said, at one point, that she has enough jewelry. Well that was before she spotted this beauty.

3. Stylish yet functional trench coat from The North Face, for our unpredictable Spring & early Summers in the Pacific Northwest.

4. Cube Terrarium from West Elm

5. Godiva is out, Fran’s is in. Made in Seattle, Fran’s ever-popular dark chocolate covered grey salt caramels. Mmmm….devine. And don’t expect her to share.

6. Cozy outdoor couch by Room & Board, for lounging & entertaining in the backyard while the kids play outside.

7. Dads, take the kids for the morning and send mom to the special Mother’s Day yoga class taught by my amazing former neighbor Shelley Curtis at Whole Life Yoga. This special class is on Mother’s Day from 9-10:30AM, which is perfect for getting zen before heading to brunch!

8. What every mother wants: amazingly beautiful documentary photographs that tangibly show her just how beautiful motherhood has made her. Contact me to book that session! 🙂

BONUS: Finally, don’t buy mom a Mother’s Day card. Do this instead. I posted that article on my personal Facebook page, and a ton of my girlfriends reshared or tagged their husbands.

So now get out there and do this, dads (on behalf of kids!)!!! Since this is the Procrastinator’s Edition, #2, 3, 5, 6, and bonus can all be found at University Village! Yay!!!

{Seattle documentary family photography} At our table

April 26, 2015
seattle documentary child photography

As I’ve been working diligently on my 365 project (shooting one photograph daily for a year), I realized that much of our life happens at our dining room table. There is at least one meal a day together at this table, plus play time, art projects, lots of silliness and of course our fair share of tears.

I will admit that there are days when I feel completely uninspired. Like my life is monotonous and boring, with the same scenes and the same characters day in and day out. But then I take a moment to step back and look at this collection of photographs of my people that I’m creating, and I find renewed energy and inspiration. Yes, the scene is familiar. But these are the moments, the connections, the expressions, and emotions of the people I love, and I remember why I picked up my camera in the first place. So yes. There are days that are not as easy, and I might end up with a pretty “blah” image that day. But overall, I’m really loving the challenge of shooting daily (I have never shot for this many consecutive days in my ENTIRE LIFE!). I’ve been giving myself grace and not expecting a share-worthy image every day, but I’m loving the handful of gems that I’m walking away with.

I’ve found that the beauty comes in being able to step back and look at the images as a collection. Noticing little themes in our day to day life. I know I’ve been photographing a lot at the dining room table, but just today it occurred to me to put a handful of them together to see what they look like. I did that the other day when I noticed that I had a number of 365 images of Morgan with her Care bear. I’ll post that one to the blog soon. But for now, behold….what life looks like at our table!

{Seattle documentary baby photographer} Welcoming Alex

April 1, 2015
seattle pregnancy portraits

This family has an amazing story to tell. It’s not my story to tell, but those who know and love this family know that this second baby is a complete miracle. Just two years ago they would never believe they would be growing their family and adding a son. I feel so privileged to have been a witness and documentarian of mom’s amazing belly, Alex’s first hours in the hospital, and then first weeks at home. I recently sent off this video slideshow that I created for my clients, and after mom viewed it she told me it brought both her AND her husband to tears. Baby Alex is almost 5 months old, and already he’s changed so much from when I took his newborn photos. It really is insanely crazy how much a baby changes in the first year of life. I’m so glad I could take these photos for them to hold onto those oh so fleeting early days.

This couple also holds a special place in my heart, because they wholeheartedly trusted my artistic vision and made this beautiful image go from my mind’s eye to reality. Because I knew I was coming back to their home to take newborn photos after baby’s birth, I had an idea for a “before & after” series.

Seattle documentary baby photography

Because my heart lies in storytelling and documentary-style photography, I very very rarely (okay, like never) go into a session with an idea for an image in my mind. I much rather prefer to naturally let things unfold, and wait for the real story to reveal itself. I never know what those stories are going to be, and that is one of the things I love about photography. It’s like a choose your own adventure every time! But this one rare time, I had the idea, threw it out there, and they were willing to try anything. I got mom ready, then we called dad into their master bedroom and told him we needed him to take off his shirt for the photo! He was such a good sport, he didn’t give it a second thought! Thanks, guys, for trusting my artistic vision. I love how this set of photos came out!

And finally, their video slideshow!

And I was super excited last week to find out that the maternity image won 8th place in the Shoot and Share 2015 Photo Contest!!! Not too shabby considering there were 3858 images entered in the Maternity category!
