January Letters to our Daughters {personal projects}

January 20, 2013

I’m so pleased to introduce you to the first of several personal projects I’ve committed to this year. For this project, I’ve joined with 14 other photographers to write one letter per month to our daughters (and/or sons!) and accompany it with our photography, then we’ll link to each other’s blogs. It’s an opportunity for me to slow down and record some of the things that make my daughter so special to me, as well as to capture those sentiments in photographs. Each month there is a photographic theme which each person may choose to follow as a way to challenge ourselves in our growth as photographers. We’ve also committed to getting into the frame more with our kids, knowing that they will treasure these photographs of us in our “younger days” when they are older, so I hope to include at least one self-portrait each month.  This month’s photographic theme is close-up portraiture. Please note that this is as close as she would allow me to get, and the $1.99 clearance gingerbread house kit makes for a fun weekend art project in January 🙂

Dear Pumpkin,

I hardly know where to begin. I’ve thought a lot about what I want to write to you this month. We’ve all had a lot of changes lately. You went from being an only-child to being the BIG sister of not one, but TWO babies just a few weeks before your 3rd birthday. Oh, how I worried so much about how this change to our family would affect you. I worried about you for months. Would you hate me for a little while? Would you despise your baby brother and sister for a while? I was so worried about you that I cried in the car after the doctor told me it was time to be induced; the babies would be born soon and your world would be turned upside down.

But you know what? You surprised me. You are in LOVE with your babies. You are so sweet with them, always hugging & kissing them, playing with them when they are having tummy time, and comforting them when they cry. And you still love me! In fact, you are even sweeter and snugglier than before. Maybe it’s because now I can actually sit on the floor to play with you and pick you up. I’m so relieved you did not go through an “I hate you” phase that I was gearing up for. I guess I really underestimated you, but know that it so warms my heart to see you loving on your baby brother and sister.

I’ve been pretty tired from the babies, so I know haven’t been as attentive to you as I should. And I’m not as patient as I should be either. Please know that I’m doing the best I can. I try not to spend too much time dwelling on whether I’m doing things “right” or making the “best” decisions for you. One could easily get swept down a mommy guilt spiral that you’ll only understand when you become a mom yourself one day. Trust me.

So until then, just know that I love you more than you will ever understand; that is, until you have a daughter of your own.

Always,

Mama

Now please head over to the talented Jessica Thomason’s blog to read her sweet letter to her daughter and enjoy her breathtaking photography. If you feel so inclined, follow all 15 blogs in a circle until you make it back here, and as always, leave us some blog love in the form of a comment! 🙂

Product share: Storyboards | Seattle family & child photographer

December 31, 2012

One of my favorite and most popular product offerings are custom storyboards.  Storyboards are a beautiful way to display a handful of complimentary photos together to tell, well, a story.  I can design them in almost any dimension, and feature anywhere from two to many more photos.  The most popular sizes are 10 x 20 inches, 20 x 20 inches, or 16 x 20 inches.  After our session, I will mock up a storyboard or two and add them to your proofing gallery using my favorite images from your session.  Sometimes you have a particular space on your wall that you’re hoping to fill, so feel free to let me know if there’s a specific size you’re interested in.  Of course I can always swap out images once we’ve settled on a layout.

Storyboards are professionally printed on archival photographic paper, then mounted on foamboard.  The result is a beautiful product ready to be framed or displayed frameless on a mantle or gallery ledge.  Another display idea is to attach a ribbon to the back, tie a bow, and hang it on a wall hook.

Here are a couple of my favorite 10 x 20 inch storyboards that I’ve created for clients.

For a real splurge, consider a custom storyboard collage printed as a gallery wrap canvas. The quality of canvas available from my professional lab is unmatched. Trust me, it blows those Group.on deal canvases out of the water. There is hands down no comparison. The result is a luxurious and ready-to-hang canvas with stunning color that won’t fade, crack or warp. Such a great gift for yourself or a special loved one. The canvas storyboard pictured below was a birthday gift for a special grandpa.

Welcoming Baby J | Birth day photos

December 22, 2012

A few months ago I had the opportunity to photograph the birth of my friend’s second child.  Still pregnant with my twins at the time, I wasn’t sure I’d make it to her birth, or have the energy needed to shoot it.  I mean, mama’s got to sleep!  Thankfully, her baby cooperated and came in the early evening before my bedtime!  While I’m not a birth photographer and the littles in my life don’t allow me to pursue this genre right now, I will say that it was such a memorable day for me.  As a photographer, it was technically challenging and magical and inspiring all at the same time.  As a friend and mother, it was so special for me to be able to witness this birth and capture these images for my friend.

Happy birthday, Morgan & Bennett! A personal post

November 2, 2012

Here’s a first look at a few photos from the birth of my twins.  I was induced due to pre-eclampsia, and thankfully the induction and delivery went smoothly.  The babies are a little premature at 36 weeks, but they are healthy and were able to come home with us from the hospital.  They met big sister Avery a few hours after their birth, and what can I say?  She is smitten.

All of the photos from the delivery were taken by my husband in P mode (programmed auto).  I chose not to put the camera in full auto (green box) mode because I didn’t want the flash going off in the OR (Did you know that with twins, you deliver in the OR, even if you’re having a vag delivery?  It’s in case something goes wrong and you need a crash c-section right away.  Anyway, it was a “different” birth experience compared to my first.).  The photos did require some editing, but I was pretty pleased with what he was able to capture, for someone who never uses a “fancy” camera!  The first image is me and my fifty-thousand chins (yikes!!!), and the caption should read “10 centimeters, ready to push!”  Morgan is the first baby to come out, followed shortly by her little brother Bennett.

The photos of big sis meeting the babies were taken by me 🙂  Enjoy!

Rounding the corner to three: 3 years old and 3 kids | A personal post

October 12, 2012

The blog has been pretty quiet for the last few months.  The main reason is that I’ve been busy gestating twins (!!!), so my photography business has been temporarily put somewhat on the back burner.  Initially I was very sick with nausea, and then the belly quickly got too big to effectively chase after toddlers with my camera!  I’m nearing the home stretch, and awaiting their arrival either this month or next month.  My doctor recently put me on modified bedrest due to preterm contractions, but this week we reached a major milestone – 34 weeks!

I will be on maternity leave through the winter, then begin accepting bookings for sessions in the spring.  Please continue to contact me if you would like to be put on my list for a Spring post-maternity-leave session.  In the mean time, I’ve been referring clients to some of my talented colleagues in the area, and I’m happy to do the same for you.

In other news, the original Yi Li (my first-born daughter) is right around the corner from turning 3 years old.  As we anticipate adding 2 more kiddos to our household, we’ve been savoring the numbered days of her as an only child.  She has the sweetest personality these days, and I can’t believe how lucky I am to be her mama.

And baby makes four | Seattle Newborn Photographer

June 18, 2012

I’m finally getting around to blogging this newborn session that I shot last month.  Mom and dad welcomed their 2nd child, a little girl, making them a happy family of four.  Mom contacted me a few days after baby’s birth.  She mentioned that she had regretted not getting professional photos taken of their first child.  Their oldest is a few months shy of 3, and he sure is a firecracker.  He was on the go go go, so luckily grandma was there to entertain him while I captured mom, dad, and baby girl.  We sure did get some sweet results.  I love capturing mom & dad interacting with their new baby, even if it’s just watching her sleep.  I can see their hopes and dreams for her as they lovingly get to know their daughter.

Big brother joined us for some sweet family photos when he was in the mood!

Thank you for allowing me to capture this special event in the life of your family!

The way I view…happiness

April 1, 2012

It’s time for this month’s installment of “The way I view…” monthly project!  This month’s theme is happiness.  Last weekend I spent the afternoon with my amazing friend Jessica, who is a talented photographer in her own right.  We visited the University of Washington campus to see the spring cherry blossoms blooming in the quad.  This annual event always draws huge crowds of people, especially on the weekends.  I think people are just ready to welcome spring, when it finally makes its appearance here in the Northwest.

We ran into a group of students carrying around a “Free Hugs” sign.  Jessica was not shy about cashing in on a free hug, and to me her expression just epitomizes “happiness”!

Don’t forget to visit Jeannie’s blog to see the way she views happiness.  Happy Spring!

She is loved | Seattle Family & Child Photographer

March 6, 2012

I really loved shooting this session.  I had the pleasure of meeting this mom back in September when we took a photography workshop together.  She contacted me recently to arrange for a portrait session, since a work promotion for dad means they’re leaving the Pacific Northwest and moving cross country.  They wanted to capture some quintessential Seattle memories, so what better place to do that than Pike Place Market?  When mom sent back her answers in my pre-session questionnaire, she talked about wanting to capture her family in the Northwest, where their family started.  So. sweet.

Little Miss M is 16 months old, so of course we planned our session around her nap.  And of course she did not nap that day!  Smart girl; she knew something exciting was in store.  I shot fast and she did great!  What really stuck with me from this session is how much she is loved.  Her mama and her daddy really love, adore & cherish her, but in the totally healthy, non-cheesy, I-can-tell-they-are-awesome-parents kind of way.   And I think they kinda like each other too.  🙂

Thank you so much for allowing me to create beautiful memories of this time & place in your lives!

The way I view…sweetness & love

March 1, 2012

I’m so excited to join an inspiring group of 11 other photographers to collaborate on a year-long monthly project.  Each month we will share photos on our blogs according to a different theme, showing “The way I view ________.”  And each blog entry will link to a different member of our group, so that you can follow through all of our entries in a circle.

This month we’re sharing photos that illustrate the way I view sweetness & love.

My dear husband actually took this photo of me and my sweet girl after we baked snickerdoodles together.  I love the expression on my face; it captures how I feel about being her mama.  So much love & sweetness.  We are blessed beyond measure.

Here are a few more photos of the cookie-baking adventure.

Be sure to visit Jeannie’s blog to see how she views love & sweetness, and if you’re looking for extra inspiration, follow all 11 links back to mine!

Project 52: Week 8 is “Self-Portrait” | Seattle Family & Child Photographer

February 25, 2012

Uh oh.  Self-portrait.  Every photographer’s worse nightmare.

If you can believe it, this was my first time using the self-timer on my camera.  Usually there’s no reason.  I wanted to take a self-portrait without the use of the mirror, so I used the self-timer function then got myself into position.  I can assure you that I was probably the only idiot doing this creative assignment who was running back and forth from the back of the camera to the front.  Add remote shutter release to the wish list!

It took me a few tries before I nailed focus.  You see, it’s hard to focus on something that’s not there.  I used substitute objects, but it’s just not the same.  Anyway, dare I say this was a fun theme?  Here are my results.  It’s actually the same image, with the second being a tight crop.

Thank you, Pumpkin, for taking a nice long nap so that mama could get this done!

Little man | Seattle Family & Child Photographer

February 17, 2012

I had a lovely session photographing this little man and his family last weekend.  He turned the big ONE recently, and isn’t quite walking yet, so we decided to stick to the comfortable setting of home.  Plus, it was a bit cold and rainy outside.  Friends of the family commented that he looks like a little man and not a baby anymore!  He was a pretty easy guy to photograph, except that he had a voracious appetite, so he was eating in almost all of our photos.  Oh well!  Snacking on puffs is what’s going on in his life right now, so we captured it.  Enjoy 3 photos above where he’s NOT eating!

I experimented with some black & white processing, using a preset that I’ve seen a lot lately.  It’s different than my usual black & white style, but I like it too.  I processed the same photo using the preset, and then also with my own custom B&W conversion method, then posted both versions on Facebook and asked the mom which one she preferred.  Guess what?!  She picked my B&W conversion!!!  That made my day, and was a great reminder to me to believe in my own artistic vision.

I’m also experimenting with storyboards, so enjoy more photos from this session in this series below.  I couldn’t decide which one I liked better, so here are both of them (with only one repeat photo!).

Project 52: Week 6 is “Emotion” | Seattle Family & Child Photographer

February 14, 2012

Happy Valentine’s Day!  For this week’s theme “Emotion”, I’m sharing a sweet photo of my little Pumpkin and her baba (daddy in Mandarin) exchanging a moment of love.

She came down with some sort of virus over the weekend, and was not her usual spunky self.  She had a low grade fever all Sunday and Monday.  The one benefit of her being sick is that she is EXTRA snuggly.

In this photo, baba was squeezing her tight then letting go.  She would then grab his arms and wrap them around herself to ask for more hugs, while snuggling into his arms.  I love the little smile of contentment on her face.

So.sweet.

Have a LOVEly week!

Project 52: Week 5 is “Simplicity” | Seattle Child & Family Photographer

February 5, 2012

I’m taking some creative latitude with this week’s theme of “simplicity”.  I had imagined a really simple photo with a lot of negative space, but that just didn’t happen this week.  What happened was a splendidly gorgeous, sunny winter day in Seattle, and I really wanted to share this photo this week.  It sort of fits the theme, in that it is “simply” and very minimally post-processed.  Yes, the light was really that beautiful.  The only edits I made were to bump up the clarity and sharpening just a touch.  So, “simplicity” of post-processing, which I really love.  I’d much rather be behind the camera taking photos than trapped behind my computer editing them.  When they come out of the camera looking like this, it’s pure magic.

Stay tuned for Week 6’s theme: Emotion.  Have a great week and Happy February!  I can’t believe January is gone already.

Project 52: Week 4 is “Imperfection” | Seattle Child & Family Photographer

January 29, 2012

I wracked my brain all week trying to come up with a suitable photo for this week’s theme.  Even after this note came home from school with my 2 year old on Friday, it didn’t hit me until tonight at bedtime.  This fit the theme “imperfection” perfectly.  I knew I wanted to write about this “bad report” from school on my personal family blog; it’s just so hilarious.  What’s even more funny is when I asked her if she’s been pushing her friends at school, she answers emphatically, “No mama!”  And so it begins…heh heh!

Stay tuned for next week’s photo.  The theme for week 5 is “simplicity”.  Have a great week!

Project 52: Weekly Photograph Project | Seattle family photographer catch-up!

January 24, 2012

I’m joining in a tad late on a Project 52, where we post and share a photo a week based on a particular theme.  The Project 52 is just for me; no client photos.  The idea is to be more disciplined about taking and sharing family photos regularly (and maybe being in a few of them too).  The weekly theme is to keep the creative juices flowing.  I love the idea of having a photo of my family from every single week of the year, all in one spot, at the end of the year.  I also just attended a great seminar on photo book making, so this project would make a great book theme at the end of the year.  Many of my Project 52 photos will likely feature my daughter a.k.a. Pumpkin.  Because I’m playing catch-up, this post features 3 photos, but my goal is to stay current and feature a single photo along with the theme.  This week’s theme (week 4) is “imperfection”.  Oh, that’s EASY.

Here we go!

Week 1: Pumpkin playing in the living room.  Beautiful light streaming in from the windows.  I really love some of her expressions!

Week 2: My nephew CJ getting a bath post cake smash

Week 3: Snow week! What better way to beat the melted snow than to hit the pool.

Photographing baby at 4-6 months | Seattle Family & Baby Photographer

January 14, 2012

Did you miss the window to get newborn photos done of your baby?  I so get it.  A new baby can turn your life upside down.  Maybe you had an unexpected C-section and having professional photos done during the first 2 weeks of baby’s life was unthinkable.  Maybe you had breastfeeding difficulties like me and were living at the lactation consultant’s office.  Maybe baby was jaundiced (like mine too) and she spent several days on her own “tanning” bed getting phototherapy.  Maybe you just did not feel “pretty” right after birth and the thought of inviting a stranger (e.g. a photographer!) into your home was the last thing on earth you were ready to do.

Well, don’t despair!  Four to six months of age is a fantastic (and often overlooked) time to get photos done with baby.  They are sporting an awesome toothless grin, have more head control, have mastered tummy time, but aren’t crawling yet.  And my favorite part?  The most awesome CHUB!!!  Plus mom and dad are a little more rested and into a groove.

Don’t get me wrong.  I love the newness of photographing a fresh newborn.  But older babies are just so FUN!  I sure had fun photographing this family today.  And check out baby’s CHUB.  The best I’ve seen in a long time!  Contact me to get photos of your older baby today!

H Family portraits | Seattle family photographer

December 30, 2011

What a joy to photograph the H family the day after Christmas!  I wasn’t planning to do any sessions over the holidays in order to maximize time with my own family, but I just could not turn down this request.  This family gathered from near and also very far for the holidays, so it was really special to photograph them together.  It was also their first grandchild’s visit to Seattle.  So special.  Baby’s grandma wanted this photo session because her son and daughter-in-law don’t have many photos of the three of them as a family.  This is a common theme in many families, even mine.  They have many of just baby or mom & baby, since dad is the family photographer, so I wanted to get a few special ones with dad & baby.  I was so happy to create some beautiful images of them as an entire family.  And boy, did baby do well, even though she was on east coast time and overdue for a nap!!!!

The porch swing in the last photo tells a family story.  It was the setting for many a Christmas card photos when these boys were growing up.  Dad would haul out the tripod and one roll of 36 exposure film back before the days of digital, to try to capture a family picture for the annual holiday card.  It was fun to get a family photo in the same swing now that everyone is grown up!  And don’t you just love baby’s expression in that last photo?!  Awe.some.

E Family portraits | Seattle family photographer

December 12, 2011

Yesterday I had the opportunity to photograph a beautiful family who is about to expand to 4!  We met at their home on the Eastside, which looked like it was straight out of the pages of a Pottery Barn catalog.  There were so many options in their home, which of course was decked out for the holidays with an 8 foot tree!  Their little girl who is about to become a big sis has the most magical bedroom, complete with a pink feathered canopy, hot pink bench, and fairy wings!  I could tell they have a lot of fun and a lot of love in their home.  BONUS – the sun came out for a bit as I captured some cool photos of mama in the backyard with an awesome vintage umbrella.  Purple, of course, because they are Dawgs!
